The Reviews of MDI Murshidabad have been somewhat mixed, with many aspiring PGPM students looking to compare the placements, faculty, and rankings of established MDI Gurgaon with the newly launched Murshidabad campus.
Our expert – An MDI Gurgaon alumnus, reviews MDI Murshidabad on the three key aspects i.e. placements, faculty, and rankings, and shares her invaluable insight by answering one of the most common questions i.e. MDI Gurgaon vs MDI Murshidabad.
MDI Murshidabad – An Introduction
MDI Murshidabad, or Management Development Institute – Murshidabad (MDIM), provides AICTE-approved PGPM Progam at the Murshidabad campus in West Bengal. MDI was set up as an autonomous body in 1973 in collaboration with KFW, West Germany, and with enthusiastic assistance from the Industrial Finance Corporation of India.
To impart quality education, nourish talent, and prepare them to become global leaders, MDI launched its Murshidabad campus in 2014. The foundation stone was laid by the then-Indian Union Minister of Finance and Former President – Pranab Mukherjee.
MDI Murshidabad is a very young business school that strives to create a positive impression on people, organizations, and society. In 2014, MDI launched its Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM), which is approved by the AICTE but has yet to receive its AIU approvals.
The campus of MDIM is located in the northern part of the State of West Bengal, India. MDI Murshidabad prides itself in not only providing quality education but also developing moral corporate citizens of new India.
MDI Murshidabad vs MDI Gurgaon: Comparing Placements, Faculty, and Rankings
MDI Murshidabad Rankings
Let’s be honest. In terms of placements, rankings, and reputation, MDI Gurgaon vs MDI Murshidabad is the wrong question to ask. MDI Gurgaon has been consistently ranked as India’s Top 10 business school, while the ranking of MDI Murshidabad lags dramatically. There is no comparison, and one should not even think of comparing both campuses.
Let’s also not forget that MDI was established in 1973, and the Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM) at MDI Gurgaon (MDIG) was launched in 1994, 18 years before they opened their second campus at Murshidabad.
MDI Gurgaon has often been placed just below the IIMs (A, B, C), and in most of the authentic rankings, MDIG has been placed at the No. 5 spot. Only IIM-A, IIM-B, IIM-C, and XLRI have been ranked higher.
On the contrary, MDI Murshidabad does not find a place in Top-20 business schools in India, for now, and would be more comparable to IMI-Kolkata, IMI-Bhubneshwar, IMT-Nagpur, IBS-Hyderabad, BIMTECH-Bhubneshwar, etc.
REVIEWS: Teaching & Faculty @ MDI Murshidabad
In terms of teaching and faculty, the Gurgaon and Murshidabad campuses offer similar course curriculum for their flagship PGPM program. Most of the faculty at the Murshidabad campus are from MDI Gurgaon and other leading b-schools, including IIM Calcutta, ISI Calcutta, IITs, Jadavpur University, Calcutta University, IIFT, etc.
MDI Murshidabad received A* (A star) grading at National Level and an A*** grading at State Level from CRISIL. MDIM also had the honor of being established as one of the members of the prestigious Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia (AMDISA) for a period of five years, effective from April 2019 to March 2024.
MDI Murshidabad has also set up a state-of-the-art Bloomberg Finance Lab with the aim to improve the vision of developing thought leaders and change masters by incorporating next-generation tools in the PGPM program. MDIM is also planning to establish a marketing simulation lab to enhance the learning and practical applications related to B2B and B2C markets.
So, in terms of faculty, pedagogy, and teaching methodology, the reviews of both MDI Gurgaon and MDI Murshidabad are very good and somewhat comparable.
REVIEWS: Placements @ MDI Murshidabad
In terms of placements, it would again be unfair to compare the placements of MDI Murshidabad with the Gurgaon campus. The average placement package at MDI Gurgaon is a whopping 19 lacs/annum, with the highest packages reaching up to 40 lacs.
According to MDI Murshidabad, students at the b-school received summer internships and final employment offers from leading organizations from across India. These include ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, IDFC First Bank, Federal Bank, ICICI Securities, Total, Berger Paints, OYO, Coffee Day Beverages, EazyDiner, MarketsandMarkets, Donaldson, SBI Life, SVG Media, Ken Research, Ipsos, VLCC, Linde, Furnace Fabrica, Bellwether Advisors, Ameriprise Financial, TATA Class Edge, etc.
Despite boasting of attractive brands, the Placements at MDI Murshidabad may not look very attractive, with an average package of 9 lacs/year and the highest package of 12 Lacs. And one must also remember that the average package (of almost all the B-schools) is confusing, so it’s better to check the median packages instead.
Even most of the business schools in India exaggerate their highest package by inflating the variable component of the remuneration. What exactly was the variable component of the 12 Lacs in MDI Murshidabad is unknown, and the same holds true for the Gurgaon campus and other leading b-schools as well.
Concluding the review, MDI Murshidabad is a good business school with a great brand value of MDI and accepting applications (for now) with a low CAT score. At present, its ranking may not be jaw-dropping, however, within a few years, it should slowly and steadily emerge as India’s preferred business school.
It’s worth the investment if you are ready to study deep east in Murshidabad.
