Army Chief General Bipin Rawat on Friday said that in a bit to empower the infantry forces of the Indian Army, they will be provided one of the world’s best rifles, manufactured by firearm major Sig Sauer in the United States by the end of the year.
The Army has set up an ordinance factory in Amethi to assemble the Kalashnikov-293 dismantled rifles with the venture being headed by a serving Major General as the CEO. The manufacturing unit of the AK-203 rifles, produced under a joint Indo-Russian collaboration is also expected to be available by year end.
The Army Chief also commented that the infantry will be empowered and well equipped with all modern operational capabilities. He said, “The infantry soldiers are ever-ready to go into battle on short notice, and the Army wants to empower them. And the empowerment happens by giving the soldier the right kind of war-waging material necessary for a soldier to accomplish its mission.”
Further, He also said that DRDO is moving towards developing Man Portable Anti-tank Guided Missiles indigenously. Approximately 100 soldiers from the infantry division will be trained in the Young Soldiers Training Wing established at the Officers Training Academy in Chennai for a 6 month programme.
