Fake Engineering Colleges in India Destroying Education System: Minister

There are about 277 fake engineering colleges in India which are destroying the nations education system, according to the Indian government. Among the 277 unapproved engineering colleges in India, Delhi tops the list with 66 colleges. Delhi, the capital city of India, is followed by the state of Telangana(35) and West Bengal (27) in the list of fake engineering colleges.

The information was furnished by the Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Satya Pal Singh while responding to questions asked in the lower house. Other states featuring in the top five are Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh with 23 and 22 fake engineering colleges respectively. Other states with a significant number of fake engineering colleges
include Maharashtra (16), Tamil Nadu (11), Haryana (18), Bihar (17), Andhra Pradesh (7) and Chandigarh (7).

States With Approved Engineering Colleges

States including Jammu and Kashmir, Chattisgarh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura have no fake colleges according to the list furnished in the lower house of the Indian Parliament.

The government highlighted the actions initiated by it against such fraud colleges and said that it has asked the state governments to shut down such colleges. The minister said that these institutes which host unapproved courses have been warned time and again through public notices to seek AICTE approval or shut down. The University Grants Commission (UGC) also features a list of 24 fake universities on its website and this list is updated at regular intervals.

The AICTE was established under an act of the Parliament in 1987 with the vision to be a regulatory body to regulate engineering courses in India. AICTE is responsible for permissions to new technical institutions or for permissions related to new technical courses at existing colleges or universities.

This information reflects the sorry state of education in India and the unethical commercialisation around it. Will the Modi government take stringent actions against such fraudulent colleges destroying futures of youngsters in India?
