India Beats Afghanistan, Syria to Emerge “World’s Most Dangerous Country” for Women

Super-Power India Beats Afghanistan, not in a cricket match, but in Women’s Safety to clinch Top Spot for “World’s Most Dangerous Country” for Women. Given the surge in crimes against women in India, India has emerged as being the most dangerous country for women in the world. As per a poll of global experts rapes and sexual violence against women in India is the highest in the world. The Thomas Reuters Foundation survey was released on Tuesday morning.

Following India on the list of nations with most crimes against women are two war-affected nations. Afghanistan and Syria take the second and the third place on the list of nations with most crimes against women. This survey consisted of a poll in which 550 experts on women issues participated. Syria was further followed on the list by Somalia and Saudi Arabia in terms of sexual violence against women.

The United States is the only western nation to feature in the top 10. The US is ranked at a joint third position in terms of crimes against women and sexual violence against women. The last survey was conducted in 2011. Even in 2011, India was among the most dangerous nations for women while Afghanistan topped the charts. But between 2007 and 2016 the crimes against women have increased by 83%.

World’s Most Dangerous Country” for Women

Experts suggest that India hasn’t been doing enough to stop crimes against women in India. Rapes and sexual violence in India have staggering numbers describing them. India was also ranked as the most dangerous nation in terms of human trafficking, sex slavery, female infanticide, forced marriage and other customary practices of atrocious nature. Indian officials refused to comment on the results of the survey.

India’s flagship program for women empowerment, “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” translating to “Save Girls, Educate Girls” seems to have miserably failed. While the present government has strongly reiterated that they would work towards reducing the crimes against women in India, things have rather gone from bad to worse.
