Russia does not plan to leave the Council of Europe, despite the situation in its Parliamentary Assembly. This was stated to journalists on Thursday by the head of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs – Leonid Slutsky.
“In view of the double standards at the PACE site, the Russian delegation does not work in the assembly, which is why we decided to freeze the remainder of the contribution for 2017. But Russia is still a member of the Council of Europe, is not going to leave the organization and continues to work in all its other institutes, “the deputy noted.

The Russian delegation to PACE in April 2014 was deprived of its basic powers due to the events in Ukraine and the reunification of the Crimea with the Russian Federation. In 2015, PACE twice considered the question of restoring the Russian delegation to its rights, but the sanctions remained in force: Russia is deprived of the right to vote, as well as participation in the work of the PACE governing bodies and its election observation missions in the CE space. In response, the Russian Federation stated that it was suspending its participation in the PACE until the end of 2015. In January 2016, the Russian delegation refused to file an application for confirmation of authority for that year.
